History
Where did it all start?
It all started in September 1971 when Wargrave House School opened its doors for the first time, becoming the first residential weekly-boarding school specifically for Autistic children in the North West of England.
Wargrave House
Wargrave House Limited was the charity formed to run the school created by our first Principal, Bessie Berman. It has now been renamed and is called Remarkable.
Although with a new name, our charity will not significantly change its original values. Remarkable will continue to support, educate and ensure a brighter future for autistic children and young people.
At Remarkable, we aim to:
- Create an environment in which our students and their families feel safe, supported and valued.
- Provide an environment giving opportunities for extending their experiences and developing skills in a bespoke way depending on the individuals support needs.
-
Use a total communication approach to develop communication skills so that individuals are able to express things that are important to them.
-
To support our students to develop relevant skills for independent living line with their priorities and support needs.
-
To provide advice, liaison and support for families, carers and communication partners.
Moving forward 50 years, as a Remarkable Charity, we now have three branches: Wargrave House School & Sixth Form, Ascent College, and Sundial Therapy. All services are integral to the Remarkable Group, and we will ensure that the legacy left by Bessie Berman endures. We will continue to provide the best innovative and transformative services.
